Judge Mrs. Yolanda Lininger

I was thrilled to be asked to judge a specialty that has long been one of my favorites. This club has always had a group of members who work their tails off, no pun intended. Hard-working members outdid themselves once again. Thank you to this year’s show chair Sarah Black, always just a phone call away.

The show location is STUNNING to stay the least, literally right on the shore of Lake Erie. Our day started with the most amazing weather. Beautiful sunshine, high of 80 degrees with a lovely breeze right off the lake. From the amazing weather, the big beautiful grass ring, to the professional ring steward, to my co-judge, travel partner and dear friend Janet Bodin, and of course the most important of all, the amazing Pembrokes, I couldn’t ask for a better day, or better assignment.

I felt the quality of the entry was good, with some outstanding specimens of exceptional breed type and soundness. My winners stood out! There were classes that I could have gone either way and some classes, such as the Veteran classes, I wished I had more than one first place ribbon to give out.

I think our breed is in good shape overall. I found there to be improved underjaws, good bone, moderate Pems of proper breed type. I think we still need to be aware of proper eye shape and color, ear shape, and shape and tightness of foot with the correct length and angle of pastern. Another mention I must make is conditioning. I found some of the dogs had lovely breed type, I would have liked to have done more with them, but they were much too heavy. Weight and conditioning can make or break even a beautiful Pem and negate the positives when they are not able to move well.

Thank you again for inviting me to judge your Pembrokes. I will remember it fondly.

She is incredibly sound coming, going and on the side. There is no excessive lift to her movement, she reaches and drives without effort. A correct headpiece with pretty dark eye and lips. Correct shape ear and ear set. She is quality through and through and I was thrilled to have her in my ring and to award her BEST OF BREED!

Judge Mrs. Janet Bodin

I’d like to thank the officers and members of the Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of the Western Reserve for inviting me to judge the entry of your 2018 sweepstakes. As I said, this club is dear to my heart, having had my very first sweepstakes assignment here in 2007; it was a delight to wrap things up at the same show. I want to thank Sarah Black for the wonderful hospitality, which included a fabulous judges welcome basket. Your club is so fortunate to have your show on these grounds near Lake Erie. The banquet at the vinyard topped off a perfect day, such a beautiful venue. I also have to say, having my dear friend Yolanda Lininger as my co-judge made this a show I will always remember and look back on fondly, we had lots of laughs. Thank you also to Hope Weisburn for the lovely gift of the red/white corgi, something to cherish.

I just have to comment, that when I judged in the early morning, the grass was very wet and some of the dogs did not care to move at that time of day, some handled it well and some didn’t. I was pleased to watch them in the afternoon, when the ring had dried up, improve their gait. I enjoyed my entry, especially the veterans, WOW, they really came out to show, what a quality group of four veterans. Thank you all who entered and showed to me on this day and my weekend would have been complete if the Queen, dressed in her purple outfit, would have driven home to Wisconsin with us, what a fun prop that was!

PUPPY DOGS 6 TO 9 MONTHS (1 entered, 0 absent)

1.  MAGIC MOMENT’S TCHOTCHKE A redheaded tri boy with a pleasing head and a good ear set. He had a good reach of neck into a nice level topline. I would prefer to see more upper arm on this boy. He was shown in good coat and condition.

PUPPY DOGS 9 TO 12 MONTHS (5 entered, 1 absent)

1.  EWEKNOW SANDFOX SOMETHING SPECIAL (GChB. SpringmillA Blast From The Past x Sandfox Black Robin)  Breeders: Vicki Sandage, DVM, Sharon Lofley & Brenda Stiles. Owner: Sharon Lofley. This was a red and white boy that was well up to size for his age; his head needs to catch up to the rest of him which I’m confident it will, but he has a good reach of neck and a very pleasing, typey outline. He carries good front to rear angles; he was shown in lovely condition, carrying a correct coat and when he moved he had nice reach and drive. It was my pleasure to award him BEST OPPOSITE SEX IN SWEEPSTAKES and I congratulate his breeders, owners and handler.

2.  PERIVALE SECRET ENCOUNTER AT REMARQUE This red and white male was very similar in outline to the number one placement. He has a pleasing head, correct ear set, a good level topline with a correct coat that was in blossom condition. He is a clean mover and was well handled.

3. GULLYBROOKE BACK IN BLACK A redheaded tricolor boy with a good level topline, he was in a nice coat, good condition and a clean mover.

4.  GULLYBROOKE BLACK FOREST OF ULAMAUNA A redheaded tricolor boy with a pleasing head and a dark eye. On the day his topline was a bit off; he had good bone and was a clean mover.

12 TO 15 MONTH DOGS (1 entered, 0 absent)

1. NCHANTED PEMBERLEY DAMNED YANKEES This red and white boy has a correct head, but I woud like to see a larger eye; he carried a level topline and a nice reach of neck and good length of outline. Would like to see more forechest. He had nice side gait and was a clean mover despite the wet grass, good reach and drive.

15 TO 18 MONTH DOGS (2 entered, 0 absent)

1.  LIONHART COURAGEOUS FINN-ESSE A redheaded tricolor male with a correct head and a pleasing expression, he had a level topline, nice bone and carrying good coat. He was an easy mover that would need to trim back in weight a bit.

2.  SANDFOX GOLDEN MONARCH A red and white male with a pleasing head, he had a level topline, would like to see more length of ribcage on him and less length of loin. He was clean coming and going.

PUPPY BITCHES 6 TO 9 MONTHS (3 entered, 0 absent)

1.  RANPRIU BRYNLEA BLUEBERRY YUM YUM This redheaded tricolor girl had a pretty head and a correct outline. She has a lovely reach of neck flowing into a level topline, in good coat and condition. She is a clean mover when she is focused and liked to give her handler a little attitude to keep him on his toes.

2.  MAGIC MOMENT A KEEPSAKE TRIBUTE TO CORALIE This lovely bodied-up red and white girl has a lot to like; she is a very balanced girl with a correct outline and front to rear angles. She never gave me any ears so it was hard to see her expression, however, she is a clean mover and with more practice in the ring, should get the hang of this.

3.  MAGIC MOMENT WISH UPON A STAR This was a redheaded tricolor girl that was smaller than those above her, she has a cute face and correct expression, carrying a level topline, she was not keen to move on the wet grass today.

PUPPY BITCHES 9 TO 12 MONTHS (5 entered, 1 absent)

1.  STERLING SHINE THE LIGHT (GChS. Lionhart’s All About Harry x GCh. Sundance Grace Kelly) Breeders/Owners: Kara Janiszak & Alyssa Janiszak. A red and white girl with a correct head, she has a pleasing expression with a good reach of neck that flows into a level topline. She has good front to rear angles and has pretty correct side gait with nice reach and drive, not in her best coat today, but what you see is what you get and she is a well made girl that I was pleased to have in my ring. I congratulate her breeders and owners and was happy to award this honest, nice young lady BEST IN SWEEPSTAKES.

2.  PERIVALE FANTASY FLIGHT This redheaded tricolor pushed the number one girl hard on the day; she is a lovely feminine girl with a correct outline. I would prefer a shorter ribcage on her and her topline was a bit off today; but she was a clean mover and carries wonderful breed type.

3.  PERIVALE FLIGHT TO PARADISE This girl caught my eye immediately for her lovely and correct outline with substance, bone, coat and short correct angled hocks. Her head is correct, loved her length of muzzle and underjaw. She has a wonderful layback of shoulder and she was a clean mover and very correct in every single way except for her eye color. This balanced girl would have it all if she carried the correct eye color that our standard calls for. She was well handled and deserved this placement in a quality-filled class.

4.  GULLYBROOKE LITTLE BLACK DRESS A redheaded tricolor girl with a pleasing head, a good reach of neck that flowed into a level topline. Not in the coat of those above, but an easy mover in a class of good company.

15 TO 18 MONTH BITCHES (2 entered, 0 absent)

1. TALISMAN CHIAROSCURO A well bodied-up redheaded tricolor with a pleasing head, carrying a level topline. She has a correct prosternum which was nice to see, she has a correct coat and nice bone, she was a clean, easy mover in this wet grass.

2.  BEAUMANOR BROGAN BAROSSA VALLEY A pretty outline on this red and white girl, not the size of the girl above her, but a quality girl no less. She has a correct head and expression, a level topline and was a nice easy mover. I don’t think she was fond of the wet grass as she used herself much more later on in the afternoon.

VETERAN SWEEPSTAKES

This was a lovely entry of veterans, some of which I hadn’t seen in years and was delighted to have them inside my ring; as I said at the banquet, all four of these veterans are worthy of winning a class and should be shown at our PWCCA National.

VETERAN DOGS 7 TO 10 YEARS (2 entered, 0 absent)

1.  GCH. BRUMBAER’S TO DIE FOR A very typey red and white boy that has lovely Pembroke breed type, a very pretty head, with a white flashy collar, in a beautiful coat for this time of year, he is a balanced dog that is moderate and has correct front to rear angles. He loves to show and on the day he certainly did, I congratulate his breeders/owners and handler and it was my pleasure to award him BEST OF OPPOSITE SEX IN VETERAN SWEEPSTAKES.

2.  GCH. SANDFOX CADENZA This sable boy is a great showman as well, he is a beautiful mover and has a longer body shape and outline than the dog above. He has a pleasing head and expression with a lovely level topline, not carrying the coat of the dog above, but without a doubt, he is a wonderful veteran boy who has correct free flowing sidegait that held his topline on the move.

VETERAN BITCHES 10 YEARS AND OVER (2 entered, 0 absent)

1.  CH. BRYNLEA TEENY WEENY BIKINI A beautiful redheaded tricolor girl that just caught my eye as she confidently trotted into the ring and said, “Let’s go”. A pretty correct-shaped head with correct proportions and a nice earset with a lovely reach of neck that flowed into a correct topline. She is a moderate, balanced girl, not extreme in any way. She has a wonderful shoulder assembly which she really showed off on the move from the side, I loved this girl as a puppy and she showed and moved like a youngster on this day. Congratulations to her breeders and owners and I thank you for bringing this little gem out today and I was happy to award her BEST IN VETERAN SWEEPSTAKES.

2.  CH. KEEPSAKE SMOOTH JAZZ AT FOXWOOD Wow, yet another lovely veteran girl to have in the ring who pushed the one above today; she is in great condition with a pretty shaped head and correct female Pembroke expression, she has the correct balance and outline with good ribbing and a short loin that some of the younger entries lacked; carrying a pretty, correct coat she is a nice clean and easy mover. Again, this was a class I will always look back on fondly, a lovely veteran girl who did not look her age at 11 and I was pleased to have her in my ring.
